Learn Chinese
The simple act of learning a foreign language can open up a whole new world of experiences.
Studying abroad is a great way to expand your knowledge and understanding of another culture, and the more different from your own the new culture experienced is, the more of an eye-opener your experience will be. Asia is particularly interesting for western people who have different cultural backgrounds. If you learn Chinese, the process itself will be rewarding, but you can also apply to study at a Chinese tertiary institution and benefit from living in a country with a thriving economy.
Speaking more than one language can put you at a serious advantage in the sphere of business. Often when positions are advertised, specific language skills are stated as an added bonus. If you are employed in a corporate position, learning the language of one of the countries with the most rapidly expanding economies would certainly be a smart career move. To learn Chinese can be an arduous process for the foreign person who is used to another alphabet, but the end result of being able to speak a language so different from your own will be something to be proud of.
One of the great aspects of studying abroad is that you will get to experience the sights, sounds and smells of a completely different location. China has much to see, and the beauty of everything from Chinese architecture to the fresh produce which can be bought at market stalls is exciting. You can learn Chinese easily with the aid of the right books or computer software, and the right amount of diligence. Reading up lots of information about China will help you to gain ideas of which city and university could be a good place to broaden your knowledge.
When you learn Chinese, you need not worry about your pronunciation or vocabulary not being as smooth and comprehensive as you would like. Studying in China is something which many international students are interested in, and you can thus easily enroll in courses which have been specifically developed for international students. Chinese universities have a fall and spring semester, and it is your choice which semester you attend the university for (although you can attend for more than one). Your course choice may affect when you are able to enroll.
One thing to bear in mind about travelling to a completely new location where there is a different culture is that it is not enough to simply learn the language. Even if you learn Chinese, there are likely to be situations where you experience ideas, practices and approaches which differ to those which are commonplace in your home country. It is best to try and be mindful of the importance of the cultures of others, and not to disrespect those who are different to you simply because of their difference. With greater tolerance and understanding, you will gain the maximum from your sojourn abroad, and will be able to return home with a broader mind.
